Prayer Weaving

Emma Howarth

A prayer loom gives us an opportunity to pray with our hands and creates a visual representation of our conversations with God.  Weaving together prayers with others (in community) reminds us how our lives and longings are knit together in God.

Materials:
a loom (see below)
ribbons; lengths of fabric; wool; paper strips etc
pens (optional)

To build a loom:

Take a photograph or picture frame and remove the glass. Secure lengths of string vertically as below:

Who is this for:

can be done as a group or individually. For a group, use a larger frame.

Method:

Choose a strip of material/wool/ribbon/paper that appeals to you. If it is paper, you may choose to write your prayer or a word on it.

Colour? Texture? Words? You are connecting to God and God connects to you.

Weave it through the warps (vertical strings) on the frame and as you do it, pray it!

You can do this individually or as a group. You can leave it out for people to add to — but make sure you leave an instruction card! — a creation of the conversations with God.
